About

Doris Gilden

My one of a kind ceramics creations are the culmination of an artistic career spanning over fifty years within multiple industries including Fashion Design (FIT Graduate), Interior Design and Accessory Design. I conceived a line of Women’s Handbags under the label “Eccentric” and sold to high end boutiques and department stores including Bloomingdales, Saks 5th Avenue and Neiman Marcus.

Working with “Greenware” and “wet-clay”, I create unique vessels, plates and vases as my canvas. My fashion background inspires the motifs of elegant women and silhouettes on my clay pieces which enhance the ceramic vessels I create. My techniques include carving, cutting, embossing and adding “wet-clay”, fabric and lace that burn off during the firing process and become part of the three-dimensional finished art piece. Then, in many cases, I add Swarovski crystals, 14K karat gold, platinum and even gold foil. I enjoy incorporating a wide variety of techniques into my ceramic art and feel it enhances the originality and beauty.

My ceramic art pieces have been displayed and sold in galleries, theaters, art exhibits and expositions nationwide. I am a member of the “Women In Visual Arts” as well as the “National Museum of Women in the Arts”.

One of the thrills of my work is that every piece is unique and I can never be entirely sure of how a ceramic piece will turn out until it is fired. This sense of surprise motivates me as an artist and has helped me to create some of my finest work. Each day my purpose is to create something unique and try new techniques so that I continue to grow as an artist.
